Miss Monkey
Hello, I am Miss Monkey, and I am a manners teacher for my friends. In my column, we’ll take questions from you and other kids like you when you get into situations where it may be a little confusing as to what to do. My first question came in from locally, and they asked:
“I was at a party. I was very excited and jumping up and down and I accidentally tooted. I said excuse me, but several of the kids around me still giggled like I did it on purpose. I was very embarrassed. Should I have done something different?”
First off, I want to say “Good Job” on saying ‘excuse me’ quickly, as that lets the adults in the room know you have good manners and that it wasn’t something you did on purpose.
Unfortunately, many children think that unexpected “toots” are very funny. Remember, though, that you can only be responsible for you in a situation like that. They are responsible for themselves. The grown-ups like myself will understand that you were being polite for the accidental toot, and that the other children may not be as mature as to understand the mistake.
Besides, an accidental “toot” happens to all of us sometimes, even me. I simply say “Excuse me” and go about my day.
